Maria Agatha Franziska Gobertina von Trapp was born on September 28, 1914, in Zell am See, Salzburg, Austria-Hungary. She was the first child of Georg and Agathe to be born in their family residence.
Maria's film-adapted character Louisa is portrayed by Heather Menzies. Maria was the last among the original 7 siblings to pass away. She passed away on February 18, 2014, in Stowe, Vermont, at the age of 99 years old.
4. Kurt von Trapp as Werner
Kurt Von Trapp was the film portrayal of the real-life Werner von Trapp.
Werner von Trapp is the second oldest son in the family and his film character Kurt was portrayed by actor Duane Chase. He is among the few siblings to be featured based on real life with only his name changed in the film.
In real life, Werner severed in the United States Military at the 101st Infantry Battalion and 10th Mountain Division during the Second World War. Contrary to the film, where Kurt is showcased as a little kid in his early teenage, Werner was already a grown adult and fought in World War II.
Werner changed his profession into a dairy farmer after the war ended and later retired in their family estate in Waitsfield, Vermont. Werner passed away on October 11, 2007.
5. Brigitta von Trapp as Hedwig

In the film, Brigitta is portrayed as a 10-year-old daughter of Georg and Agathe but her real-life counterpart Hedwig Von Trapp was over 21 years old at the time the family fled Austria to escape Nazis in 1938.
Hedwig was an active member of the family singing group but she later continued her career in music and choir singing even after the family stopped performing. She guided children's choir groups in Hawaii and taught them handicrafts as well.
Brigitta's real-life counterpart Hedwig passed away on September 14, 1972, at the age of 55 years old.
6. Marta von Trapp as Johanna
Marta von Trapp in the film The Sound of Music is the portrayal of the real-life Johanna von Trapp.
The second youngest child in the family, Johanna was born on September 7, 1919. She was born in the family home in Zell am See, Austria, and was about 19 years old when the family fled in 1938. She was also the last Trapp siblings to be born in their family home of Zell am See, Austria.
